The 2008 season was one to forget for the Hamilton Tigercats, who were the worst team in the CFL. With only three wins in 18 games, the Tigercats closed out the campaign with four consecutive defeats. Of course, disappointment isn't foreign to Hamilton fans. After all, this is a team that went 1-17 in 2003.
For the Tigercats to climb out of the East Division basement, Quinton Porter will have to lead the way from the quarterback position. Porter played in 10 games last season and was far better than both Casey Printers and Richie Williams, who also saw significant time under center. Now the job seemingly belongs to Porter alone, who threw for 10 touchdowns against only four interceptions and accounted for the team's only two 300-yard passing games in 2008.
Porter also rushed for 203 yards, averaging more than six yards per carry, proof that he is much more than a pocket passer. The hope is that a tailback will emerge as a workhorse, something that didn't happen a year ago. In fact, no player on the Hamilton roster rushed for more than 584 yards, despite the fact that many ball carriers boasted impressive yards per carry averages.
Prechae Rodriguez was clearly the team's best receiver a year ago, as he hauled in 70 balls, 32 more than his closest teammate. Rodriguez finished the campaign with 1,099 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, and he turned in four 100-yard games. There is no doubt that defenses will be focused on stopping Rodriguez, so players like Scott Mitcher and Chris Bauman must take advantage of single coverage.
The hope is that the offensive line will be much improved this season, with the additions of veterans Alexandre Gauthier and Dan Goodspeed. Bob O'Billovich, the general manager of the Tigercats, promises that the unit will be considerably better, although fans of the last-place Hamilton squad will likely stand cautiously optimistic.
Defensively, there is a great deal of room for improvement. The Tigercats allowed the most passing touchdowns in the league last year and had the fewest sacks. They permitted the most passing yards and second most rushing yards in the CFL, and those numbers simply aren't acceptable. Darrell Adams returns after a nine-sack season and is clearly the best pass rusher on the roster. Markeith Knowlton, who led Hamilton in tackles with 95, is also back in place. Clearly, however, those players need some help.
Porter brings hope to the franchise, but Hamilton is still a far cry from a Grey Cup contender.
